Mei Ting reached out nearly two years before her wedding. We initially met in October 2022 to plan for her photo session in July 2023 and her wedding day in February 2024. She was close to a UK size 18-20, and at that time, I didn’t have any ready-made plus size  bridal gowns in her size back then.

We discussed what styles suited her and what she adored before I proposed designs. Since she needed the gowns for both events, I suggested a package for two bespoke plus size wedding gowns. We settled on a stunning light ombre blue wedding gown for her pre-wedding photos, which she would also use for the second march-in on her wedding day. The second gown was a white A-line slim fit with flutter sleeves, perfect for the church ceremony and first march-in at her banquet reception.

Shawna had her first fitting roughly four months prior to her wedding date. She was around a UK size 14-16, and fortunately, I had a few off-the-rack plus size wedding gowns that fit her beautifully with no alterations needed. Plus, she really liked them.

A helpful tip for brides is to finalize your wedding gown at least three months before the big day. It is even more important for plus-size brides because you can enjoy the benefit of alteration or customize a brand new plus size wedding gown without express service fee. This three-month mark is crucial, and maintaining your weight during this time is highly advised. 

Emergencies do happen. I once had to remake a complete gown in just 10 days due to unexpected circumstances. However, I don’t recommend waiting until the last minute as it can be very stressful if your wedding is in two weeks and the dress isn’t ready.

If you’re undergoing intensive slimming programmes, it’s vital to inform your designer and plan for it. At K Gown, I discuss these details with brides before they decide on our bridal package. I believe in transparency and strive to communicate what I foresee and provide solutions for those situations.

Custom Plus size Gowns for Mother of the Bride

I showed her gowns that featured those elements so we could see which one looked best on her. My process for mothers of the bride is quite flexible, as I even bring out wedding dresses with the requested neckline or skirt for them to try. They just need to imagine it in a different color.

I’ve also been getting plenty of requests for altering mother-of-the-bride dresses. The most common problems include ill-fitted bodice and overly long lengths. This happens because mothers usually want dresses with sleeves and necklines, but online size charts only show bust, waist, and hip measurements, missing details like shoulder width, sleeve length, armhole, and biceps. So, mass-produced online gowns can’t fit everyone perfectly. Length is another issue since these gowns are typically longer and meant to be shortened after purchase. The same applies to any online wedding gown, no matter the size.
